MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – In a bizarre case of cross-contamination, health officials said THC was found to be present in dough from a Dane County pizza place.
Public Health Madison-Dane County officials issued an alert on Thursday. It said pizza from Famous Yeti’s in Stoughton was tainted with THC.
Multiple people got sick, and five had to be taken to the hospital. Health officials said they’ve received dozens of reports.
When health officials started to investigate what was wrong, one of the patients said it felt like they had eaten a marijuana edible. Health staff found that a container used to make pizza dough tested positive for THC.
PHMDC staff said Famous Yeti’s shares an industrial kitchen with other businesses, who make all kinds of products.
When Famous Yeti’s staff were making pizza dough in the shared kitchen, they ran out of oil. They went to another kitchen looking for it, and found an oil that looked like cooking oil, but had a label saying it contained Delta 9 cannabis. The staff member didn’t see that label.
The businesses that owns that oil containing THC was doing so legally, according to PHMDC officials. It was derived from hemp, which is legal in Wisconsin.
