Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul has filed a lawsuit Friday against billionaire Elon Musk and his political action committee to stop an effort to give $1 million to two voters who attend an event he’s speaking at in the state this weekend.

On Thursday, Musk posted a tweet on his X account (formerly Twitter) offering to give $1 million to a pair of voters who voted in the upcoming Wisconsin Supreme Court election and want to attend the event on Sunday in Green Bay. He said the money was “in appreciation for you taking the time to vote.”

Musk later updated the post to adjust the language around his offer.

“To clarify a previous post, entrance is limited to those who have signed the petition in opposition to activist judges. I will also hand over checks for a million dollars to 2 people to be spokesmen for the petition,” he wrote in the updated post.

The attorney general’s office filed the suit on Friday against Musk and America PAC, the political action committee that he funds. In the suit, the attorney general said, “Wisconsin law forbids anyone from offering or promising to give anything of value to an elector in order to induce the elector to go to the polls, vote or refrain from voting, or vote for a particular person.”

The attorney general said that the suit seeks to stop Musk.

“Musk’s announcement of his intention to pay $1 million to two Wisconsin electors who attend his event on Sunday night, specifically conditioned on their having voted in the upcoming April 3, 2025, Wisconsin Supreme Court election, is a blatant attempt to violate (the state law),” he wrote. “This must not happen.”

Earlier this month, Musk and his group offered Wisconsin voters $100 to sign a petition in opposition to “activist judges.”

The suit comes in the closing days of the high stakes, non-partisan, state Supreme Court election. Dane County Circuit Court Judge Susan Crawford, the Democratic-backed candidate, is running for the Supreme Court seat against Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Brad Schimel. Musk and Republicans back Schimel in the race. The campaign has drawn national attention and funds as many see this as an early referendum on President Donald Trump’s young administration and Musk’s role in sweeping changes to the federal government.

The suit, which was filed in Dane County Circuit Court, will be assigned to Columbia County Circuit Court Judge W. Andrew Voigt.
