OSHKOSH, Wis (WISS) – Several dozen bicyclists hit the streets of Oshkosh Saturday, May 17, as part of BikeOsh25. Participants rode the bike paths of Oshkosh, collected stamps from 20 pit stops, and brought awareness to cyclists and motorists alike on the road rules for cyclists and how to be safe.

WISS on the corner of South Main and 6th Street was one of the 20 citywide pit stops.

“ We wanna support the youth in our community, and since they’re the organizers of this, it’s a great way to give back to them,” said Station Manager Todd Michaels. “We also get to see people in our office that we normally wouldn’t see during normal business hours. And hopefully it’ll give us some ambition to get out there and be a little bit more healthy.”

Caden Lederhaus is one of the high school juniors putting on the event as a part of the Communities at Oshkosh North program.

“The weather was a little icky before, but like I’ve been seeing a lot of people biking around,” Lederhaus said of this year’s event. “Last year we got around 115, so we’re expecting about the same thing, a little more hopefully.

Over 100 bikers stopped at the WISS studios to get a stamp on their pedal pass.

BikeOsh strives to educate the residents of Oshkosh on the city’s existing biking infrastructure. Events like BikeOsh can raise awareness about biking and create more aware drivers to keep the city safer.

“ Few little lake flies in the mouth, but it was still worth it,” said Rick Leib, one of the riders in BikeOsh25.

About Communities at Oshkosh North

Communities at Oshkosh North and the City of Oshkosh have been partnering for over eight years to make BikeOsh a recurring event with increasing participation every year.

Leib, in addition to riding in the event, also helped to organize it for almost a decade.

“Normally, as a teacher, I have not been part of it, but the last five years I’ve been actually riding. And now students are joining me on the ride,” Leib said.

Communities at Oshkosh North is a community-based learning program that offers students a unique way to enhance their skills in literacy, leadership, digital citizenship, and social studies while covering all required district standards. The Communities program collaborates with businesses, organizations, and community members to provide an authentic learning experience while improving the community.
