Netflix debuts documentary “Fall of Favre”
GREEN BAY, WI—(WGBW)— This week, Netflix, the global streaming and entertainment company, released a documentary called “The Fall of Favre,” focusing on sex and welfare scandals of former Packer quarterback Brett Favre.
The documentary, produced by Netflix and sports media company Front Office Sports, takes an hour to detail Favre’s rise as a football star from Southern Mississippi University to the scandal involving inappropriate messages to an employee with the New York Jets in 2008. In that incident, the NFL found that Favre did not violate workplace conduct. However, he did admit to sending voicemails to the woman.
After retiring from football in 2010, Favre was caught up in a welfare fraud scandal in his home state of Mississippi. Critics allege that state funds totaling $77 million earmarked for needy families were spent on projects he supported, like a volleyball facility at Southern Mississippi University, his alma mater.
Favre has not been charged with any crime and denied wrongdoing concerning the Mississippi funding scandal.
On the field, Favre was one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. During his 16 years with the Green Bay Packers, he won three MVPs. He led the team to two Super Bowl appearances, including a championship victory in 1996.
Netflix’s documentary is part of its “Untold” sports documentary series. It features interviews with former New York Jets employee Jenn Sterger and former Sports Illustrated writer Peter King, among others.
Netflix and Front Office Sports said Favre declined to be interviewed for the documentary.
