MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) – Advocacy group Forward Latino is criticizing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after investigators determined that an undocumented immigrant accused of threatening the President did not write the letter at the center of the case.

According to Forward Latino President Darryl Morin, federal officials initially claimed that ICE officers had arrested the man, Ramón Morales Reyes, for allegedly making threats against the President, a statement that quickly spread.

However, Morin said investigators have since confirmed Morales Reyes was actually the victim of a crime, and that the threatening note was written and sent to ICE by someone else, in an apparent effort to have the immigrant deported before he could testify in court.

CNN reports that Milwaukee Police told them, it is “investigating an identity theft and victim intimidation incident related to this incident”.

In the initial statement about the assassination threat, DHS said Morales Reyes is from Mexico and entered the U.S. illegally at least nine times between 1998-2025. Online records indicate a history of arrests for Morales Reyes, including charges of felony hit-and-run and disorderly conduct with a domestic abuse enhancer.

Morin questioned why DHS did not recognize what he called “glaring inconsistencies” in the allegations. He’s urging the agency to focus on public safety and the law rather than politics or headlines.

Morales Reyes is being held in Dodge County.
