FITCHBURG, Wis. (WMDX) – Leaders in Fitchburg are considering a wheel tax.
In November, voters rejected a $3.6 million referendum that leaders said was necessary to support their growing city. Now, they’re hoping a wheel tax will help Fitchburg’s finances.
When drivers submit their yearly registration, they’d pay an extra $40 if they live in Fitchburg city limits.
The city could only use that money on transportation costs. According to the common council documents, that could include roads, traffic lights, sidewalks, paths and trails.
More than 60 municipalities across Wisconsin have wheel taxes, including Madison and Sun Prairie.
Dane County currently has its own $28 wheel tax too. If Fitchburg’s passes, residents would pay $68 per year on top of their regular registration fees, just like Madison residents do.
