MADISON, Wis. (CIVIC MEDIA) – The Wisconsin Supreme Court has chosen its next two chief justices.

When Susan Crawford won the election on Tuesday, that cemented the court’s liberal majority for the next three years.

Conservative justice Annette Ziegler’s term as Chief Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court ended. The justices held an election of their own to choose the next figurehead.

They chose Ann Walsh Bradley to hold the title. She’ll be the Chief Justice for two months starting May 1, and ending on June 30. She will retire at the end of July. By the time she steps down, she will have served three 30-year terms on the state’s highest court.

Susan Crawford will take Walsh Bradley’s seat on the court.

Knowing that Walsh Bradley would be stepping down, the Court chose its next chief justice ahead of time. Justice Jill Karofsky will hold the title starting on June 1 of this year.

Karofsky spent her career in Dane County, largely working as a prosecutor for the county and the state. She has specialized in serving victims, and programs that support survivors and prevent abuse.

Karofsky will serve as the state’s chief justice until April 2027.
