Eric Toney announces campaign for Attorney General, setting up a rematch in 2026
The Fond du Lac District Attorney lost to Attorney General Josh Kaul in 2022.
WAUKESHA, Wis. (CIVIC MEDIA) – The 2026 election for Wisconsin Attorney General is shaping up to be a rematch.
Attorney General Josh Kaul already announced he’s running to keep his seat after speculation he might throw his hat in the ring to become governor.
Now, Eric Toney has joined the race. He made the announcement in Waukesha Tuesday morning.
“Let’s return the Department of Justice to its core priorities: protecting Wisconsinites, supporting victims, and keeping our communities safe,” Toney wrote in a social media post announcing his candidacy.
In 2022, Toney was the GOP nominee for attorney general. He’s been the district attorney for Fond du Lac County since 2012. He was also the former president of the Wisconsin District Attorneys Association.
He said his top priorities include addressing the fentanyl crisis, changing crime lab practices, and targeting violent crime in Milwaukee.
Toney ran against Kaul in the 2022 election. It was a close race, as they often are here in Wisconsin; Kaul won with a 1.3 percent margin.
The election is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026.
