Marshfield winter farmers market will open

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WFHR / WIRI) – A new winter farmers’ market is kicking off in Wood County this weekend. The newly formed Marshfield Farmers Market Cooperative Board worked over the fall and early winter to make it a reality.

Meliss Haack is the Regional Farmers Market Coordinator for Portage, Wood, Waupaca, Marathon, and Adams Counties.

“ Through our meetings from day one, they were like, we want to have a winter market,” says Haack. “I was like, okay, we gotta do all these other things and if we can do them, let’s organize a winter market. Like why not?”

Haack said the Marshfield Summer Market vendors worked with the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry to formalize a Farmers Market Cooperative in 2025. The Winter Market will be held in the Second Street Community Center with space for about 20 vendors. They’ll sell food items like fresh sourdough, honey, maple syrup, eggs, meat, and bakery items. As we get closer to spring, vendors will start to bring produce.

“The community center’s also attached to the library,” explains Haack. “So it’s a really nice community space or like community hub where you could go and get some books at the library and then pop in at the farmer’s market and then go walk downtown and do some shopping too.”

Haack shared a couple tips for first time market shoppers.

“ If it’s your first time coming to a farmer’s market, I would say bring your own bags. And then bringing cash is ideal. Some vendors only accept cash, so if you can bring cash, that’s ideal,” says Haack. “I think a lot of our vendors are likely to have credit or debit accessibility. Just to be safe. It’s nice to have some cash in your pocket.”

Haack said this opening weekend, they’ll have door prizes from the organizers for people who attend the grand opening. They’ll have a drawing for gift certificates for the market and more. Every week, they’ll have a different hot food vendor.
