Cervical cancer is not a commonly known form of cancer, which is why events like National Cervical Cancer Month, marked in January, are necessary to call attention to it. Dr. Alexa Lowry is an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) with Gundersen.

Like many cancers, if caught early, cervical cancer can be treated and eliminated, but early detection is key.

Symptoms of cervical cancer can make a diagnosis difficult to identify, especially in the early stages.

The lack of easily identifiable symptoms and limited awareness can make properly diagnosing cervical cancer difficult if routine screenings and testing are not regularly performed. As Dr. Lowry explains, preventative care and regular testing are key to early detection and treatment.

National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month runs through January.
